New legal documents revealed in England and Wales confirm that the former One Direction band member, Liam Payne, passed away without leaving behind a valid will. As a result, and according to local inheritance laws, his only son – Bear Grey, aged 9 – is expected to be the sole heir to the late singer's massive estate.
Payne met his tragic death in October 2024, at just 31 years old, after falling from a third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Now, eight months after the disaster, the financial dimensions of the assets and wealth he left behind are becoming clear.
According to official reports based on court documents, the gross value of Payne's estate stands at a total of approximately 38 million dollars (approximately NIS 112 million). After deducting debts and various legal expenses, the net value of the estate to be inherited is estimated at approximately 32.2 million dollars (approximately NIS 94 million).
Who will manage?
Now, the distribution of the financial estate left behind is getting underway. According to inheritance laws in England and Wales, when a person dies unmarried and has not left behind a will, their children receive top priority in receiving the assets. Official British government guidelines emphasize that unmarried partners are not entitled to an automatic inheritance in these cases. The direct meaning is that Kate Cassidy, who was Payne's partner at the time of his death, as well as the rest of his extended family, are not entitled to a share of his fortune.
However, entering the legal picture is Payne's former partner and the mother of his son, singer Cheryl Cole. Court documents appointed Cheryl, alongside music lawyer Richard Mark Bray, as the official administrators of the estate. The two were formally appointed to the role on May 1, with limited authority at this stage, as their role is to manage the assets throughout the legal and bureaucratic process, and not to inherit the funds themselves.
Since Bear is a minor and children cannot directly access massive estates until they reach the age of majority, Cheryl is expected to establish a trust fund for her son. The fund will operate in accordance with accepted inheritance procedures for minors, and the entire estate will be managed and preserved under tight court supervision until he grows up.
The tragic death
As a reminder, Payne was staying in Argentina at the time to watch the performance of his former bandmate, Niall Horan, and even shared on social media about his desire to clear the air with him. On the night of his death, Buenos Aires police were called to the hotel following a report about an aggressive man who may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and shortly thereafter his death was pronounced at the scene. Following the disaster, hundreds of grieving fans gathered outside the hotel, crying and singing the band's songs.
Payne burst into global awareness in 2010 as part of the reality show The X Factor, where the successful boy band One Direction was formed alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. The lineup became an international sensation until its disbandment in 2016, at which point its members embarked on solo careers.
Alongside the phenomenal musical success, Payne struggled over the years with suicidality and alcohol addiction, and was previously hospitalized due to a severe kidney infection. In the period preceding his death, he was caught in an additional personal storm when his former partner, model Maya Henry, took legal action against him and issued a restraining order, claiming that he did not stop harassing her and those close to her with messages. Furthermore, a few days before his death, it was reported that he had parted ways with his management team and shelved his second album.
