Ashdod Port is looking beyond cargo handling to redefine its role in Israel’s economy, placing technological innovation, infrastructure development and energy independence at the center of its long-term business strategy.
The port’s priorities reflect a changing maritime industry, in which competitiveness increasingly depends not only on physical capacity, but also on operational efficiency, digitalization and the ability to maintain uninterrupted service during periods of disruption.
For Ashdod Port led by Chairman Shaul Schneider, that challenge has a distinctly Israeli dimension. As a critical gateway for the country’s imports and exports, the port has to maintain business continuity even during war, while continuing to invest in new technologies and infrastructure needed to support future growth.
Ashdod Port is Israel’s largest seaport in terms of cargo volume and serves as a major gateway for goods into and out of Israel. With 11 piers, 78 cranes, and 2,200 ships docking each year, 40% of Israel’s total cargo volume passes through the port which serves all segments - containers, vehicles, general cargo, bulk, and cruises.
At the heart of the port’s strategy is the understanding that resilience and commercial performance are closely linked. The ability to keep cargo moving during conflict, power outages or disruptions to international shipping routes is essential to the Israeli economy, but it is also a core measure of the port’s operational strength.
Building a smarter supply chain
Beyond emergency preparedness, Ashdod Port is focusing on improving the efficiency of cargo movement from ship to final destination.
For ports, efficiency depends on more than vessel turnaround times. Delays in transferring cargo between maritime, rail and road systems can create congestion, increase operating costs and undermine the performance of the wider logistics network.
The port’s goal is to create a more integrated operational flow connecting vessels, quays, railways and roads, reducing bottlenecks and improving the speed and predictability of cargo handling. Infrastructure investment and digitization are key parts to this effort, with the aim of shortening transportation times and reducing costs across the supply chain.
The port is also seeking to deepen relationships with international ports, shipping companies and strategic partners to strengthen commercial ties, improve supply-chain continuity and reinforce Ashdod Port’s position within regional and global trade networks.
Improving connectivity between maritime, rail and road infrastructure is expected to help address these challenges while making better use of existing capacity. Ashdod Port’s objective is to create a more seamless logistics platform that benefits shipping companies, importers, exporters and at the end of the day-consumers.
Innovation as a growth engine
In recent years, the Port has been advancing a broader transformation focused on innovation, technology, automation, investment and international collaboration, with the ambition to position itself not only as an operating port, but also as a platform for developing and deploying next-generation maritime and logistics technologies.
Technology is also emerging as a central component of Ashdod Port’s ambitions to strengthen its international standing. Its continued investment in innovation reflects a broader vision of transforming traditional maritime infrastructure into a dynamic ecosystem for technological development.
The port has been embedding Israeli innovation throughout its operations by investing in advanced technologies and maritime technology solutions, and also expanding cooperation with startups and technology companies.
Instead of treating innovation as a standalone initiative, it is integrating the technological capabilities directly into port operations and the broader logistics chain to improve efficiency, streamline processes and adapt more quickly to changing commercial and operational demands.
Collaboration with global tech companies is also helping connect the port to emerging solutions in the maritime sector, creating opportunities to test and implement new approaches to cargo handling, logistics and operational management.
The focus on innovation is part of a wider transformation across the global maritime industry, where ports are increasingly functioning as integrated logistics and technology hubs and not only simply as points of entry for cargo.
As geopolitical tensions continue to expose vulnerabilities in international shipping, the ability to maintain strong partnerships and adapt to changing trade routes has become an increasingly important element of port strategy.
The challenge is to balance the demands of maintaining a critical national asset with the commercial imperative to improve efficiency, invest in innovation and remain competitive. By combining these objectives, Ashdod Port aims to strengthen its role not only as a gateway for Israeli trade, but also as a more technologically advanced and resilient logistics hub.
