The United States is calling on governments around the world to take decisive action to protect Jewish communities, amid rising antisemitism and concerns over the safety of Jews ahead of the High Holy Days, A senior US State Department official told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.
“While the toxic hatred that is antisemitism is increasing around the world, the United States continues to call on governments to take decisive action to protect Jewish communities,” the official told the Post.
In recent days, the State Department sent instructions to US diplomatic missions around the world to contact local governments and request that they increase security around synagogues, Jewish institutions, and High Holiday events.
US diplomats urged to ask governments to deploy security forces for High Holy Days
In an instruction cable sent to US missions, American diplomats were asked to urge governments to deploy, when necessary, police forces, counterterrorism units, or even military personnel at synagogues and locations where prayers and holiday events will be held.
The missions were also instructed to work with local authorities to ensure security briefings and coordination with Jewish institutions, security organizations, and businesses ahead of the holidays. In an unusual measure, the cable also calls for establishing a way to deliver immediate threat alerts on Shabbat and Jewish holidays to observant Jews who do not use electronic devices.
The official also referenced the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump at the beginning of his term, which states that it is US policy to fight antisemitism “with determination” and through all appropriate legal tools.
