A Netivot resident in his 40s was arrested overnight on suspicion of involvement in the Saturday-night shooting in Netivot that left one man dead and another lightly wounded, police said Sunday.
The shooting was reported shortly after 9:30 p.m. Security-camera footage from the scene appeared to show a gunman approach two men standing in a parking area, briefly speak with them, and then open fire at close range.
One of the men was critically wounded and pronounced dead at the scene following resuscitation efforts. The second victim, a 29-year-old man who was reportedly wounded in the leg, fled into a nearby building and was later taken to the hospital in light condition.
Police initially said the shooting was believed to have been criminally motivated.
Investigations opens, assigned to Negev Central Unit
An investigation was opened, with officers collecting evidence at the scene and conducting searches for those involved. Following a situational assessment by Southern District Police Commander Haim Bublil, the investigation was assigned to the Negev Central Unit.
The suspect was arrested during the night by officers from the Netivot police station and the Negev Central Unit and was transferred for questioning.
He will be brought before a judge at the Beersheba Magistrate’s Court on Sunday, where police will seek an extension of his detention.
