What is time? Is it a straight line or an unbreakable ring? These are the thoughts that Eduard Shyfrin ponders in his hit music video “Pendulum” from his album In the Shadow of Time. Inspired by the words of King Solomon from the biblical book of Ecclesiastes – “To every thing there is a season” – Shyfrin’s song says that the movement of the pendulum reflects the duality of our world.
“The pendulum is the universal law of everything,” he explains. “It goes to the left and to the right. That’s life - there’s no other choice. It’s very difficult to keep the pendulum near the point of equilibrium. That’s one of the interesting and mysterious aspects of time, that there is a right time for everything, and we should all remember that; if you do something at the wrong time, the results could be catastrophic.”
For Shyfrin, music is more than entertainment; it is another medium through which to explore the spiritual and philosophical ideas that have occupied him for years in his writing and study of Kabbalah. Rather than presenting abstract concepts as theology alone, he seeks to express them through stories, imagery, and melody that resonate at both the emotional and intellectual levels.
In the Shadow of Time has been an impressive success. Its 7 tracks, recorded with top musicians from France in the Barillet, Ferber, and Grand Armee studios of Paris, are dedicated to different aspects of time and how we approach it.
Few artists arrive at music after careers in both international business and the study of Kabbalah. Shyfrin brings those seemingly disparate worlds together in In the Shadow of Time, an album that turns ancient mystical concepts into contemporary rock and blues.
