James Maddison waited 536 days for this moment. The English midfielder returned to Tottenham’s starting lineup on Monday night, scoring a fantastic goal in a 3–1 victory over Coventry, and did not hide his emotion after the final whistle.

Head coach Roberto De Zerbi handed Maddison a start, and the 29-year-old midfielder repaid that faith in the first half with an impressive strike from outside the box. He curled the ball into the corner, leaving Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth with little chance. For Maddison, it was far more than just another goal. Following a prolonged spell of injuries and rehabilitation, he opened up post-match about the hardships he faced on his road back.

"These are the moments you dream about," he said. "In the dark days of recovering from an ACL injury, you fantasize about these moments and these goals. It’s always the light at the end of the tunnel."

Dejan Kulusevski also made his return after 526 days on the sidelines, and Maddison reflected on his teammate's milestone as well:

"That’s why I was very emotional and proud of Dejan today, because I knew exactly how he felt stepping back onto the pitch after so long. These moments and goals make everything worth it."

Maddison added that he felt it was the right time to return to the starting XI:

"I spoke with the manager during the week, and we felt it was the right moment to get back into the lineup after a slightly fragmented start to the season. I just wanted to play well, showcase my quality, and bring what the team had been missing over the last 18 months since I last started. The manager told me to go out, play, and make him enjoy watching me from the sidelines, so I hope I did that. Scoring a goal like that is always fun."

Tottenham temporarily lost their lead following a second-half equalizer from Jack Rudoni, but Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies later found the net to seal the win. The three points moved Spurs up to 16th place, lifting them out of the relegation zone.
