Liverpool completed an impressive comeback on Tuesday evening on their way to a 4–3 win over Villarreal in the Champions League, but the person who stole the show at Anfield wasn't one of their expensive marquee signings, nor was it Alexis Mac Allister, who scored a brace. Eighteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha delivered one of his finest performances in a Merseyside shirt, providing two assists and completing seven successful dribbles to earn widespread acclaim across the English media.
Breaking records on a historic night
At 18 years and 52 days old, Ngumoha became the youngest player in Liverpool's history to assist a goal in the Champions League. Furthermore, according to Opta statistics, he is the youngest player for the club to record two assists in a single match since Michael Owen against Middlesbrough in 1998. The young talent assisted Ronald Araujo's equalizer in first-half stoppage time and, in the 65th minute, set up Mac Allister with a brilliant pass after beating three defenders. He was substituted in the 74th minute to a standing ovation from the crowd, and after the final whistle, Duran Duran's song "Rio" played over the Anfield PA system in his honor.
"It was a great team performance," the modest wonderkid said. "We were two goals down, but the mentality was always there. We knew we were going to win. This is one of the best games I've ever played. I really enjoyed it, and the team helped me a lot. Every time I get the ball and have a chance to go one-on-one or even two-on-one, I believe in myself. I'm just going to keep doing it and stay relentless."
Relentless mindset and humble reaction
On becoming the youngest player in Liverpool history to assist in the Champions League, he remarked: "It's amazing to break records like that, but the win is the most important thing." Regarding his shift to playing on the right wing, he added: "Working on that in training with the manager, the coaching staff, and the players helped me a lot." When asked about the crowd chanting his name, he replied: "We have the best fans in the world, and hearing them sing my name is a dream."
Former striker Daniel Sturridge could hardly hide his excitement on the Amazon Prime broadcast: "Rio Ngumoha was outstanding tonight. He was a constant threat to the defense and fully committed to his duties. With the ball, this kid has so much potential - and I say kid, but he's already a young man. He possesses so much quality, and these are truly things you can't teach. What he does with the ball at his feet is a God-given talent. His hard work in training, day after day, and his desire to be relentless - just as he said in his interview - are things I love to see. He wants to be decisive, and I love that about him."
Praise from the pundits and teammates
Mac Allister, who benefited from one of the teenager's two assists, was equally full of praise: "Rio was amazing tonight. He made the difference, he was crucial, and I'm happy for him. It's clear what quality he has - everyone knows it. It's easy to say he's a very good player, but he also needs to stay focused on other aspects. He worked extremely hard off the ball too."
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock joined in the praise on the BBC broadcast: "You could argue he was the star of the match. We are starting to see signs that he is fulfilling the potential we always knew he had. Now we are beginning to see real end product."
