Negotiations, according to US officials, have moved well beyond deliberations on the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, as diplomats have begun narrowing down on four key issues regarding Iran's nukes.

President Trump is trying to keep negotiations alive. Iran has shown it can still impose costs. Israel is trying to preserve deterrence without losing Washington’s diplomatic framework.

"He's had an amazing career," Trump said. "Does he want to continue? Because, you know, he's a wartime prime minister."

The concern in Israel is that, given Trump’s desire for a diplomatic agreement, he might oppose even a symbolic strike the next time tensions escalate.

“Last night, the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump described in a post on Truth Social.

Additionally, most Israelis oppose ending the war with Iran under current conditions, while a majority also say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should not run in the next Knesset election.

As Iran tests Israel’s red lines, the real battle may be over the credibility of Israeli deterrence.
