Built almost two decades ago, the Gush Etzion bike singletrack has welcomed thousands of cyclists over the years. Following recent wear and tear, the Regional Council completed a full restoration, repaving and preparing the route for riders. The works were led by Hovav Landau from Bible Bike and funded through a donation by the Katz family from Efrat, in memory of Joe Secor.
The singletrack navigates two dramatically different landscapes: The arid desert of eastern Gush Etzion and the mountainous region, characterized by agricultural terraces, natural springs, forests, and woodland. While the route presents challenging climbs, its high elevation and natural springs make it rideable even during the summer months.
"This is one of the most beautiful areas to work in Israel," says Landau. "Gush Etzion can also become the cycling capital of Israel."
Cyclists looking to experience the renewed singletrack can join the 5th Tour de Gush riding event, subtitled "Sovev Ma'ayanot" (Around the Springs), on Friday, November 13. Participants will gather starting at 6:00 a.m. near the Lone Oak.
The professional route, based on the singletrack, spans approximately 28 km, setting off at 6:30 a.m. with a participation fee of NIS 80. Those seeking a less strenuous ride can choose the intermediate route - an 18 km course primarily along wide dirt roads - starting at 7:00 a.m. for NIS 70. All participants will receive a shirt, and vendor booths will be set up at the starting point.
