The Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) Affairs approved on Thursday the granting of extended personal protection to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, Sara, and their sons, Yair and Avner.

The committee debated how long each of the family members should be granted security for, sources told Ynet.

For the prime minister, they agreed that he should be given lifelong protection.

Sara Netanyahu will be granted protection as long as her husband is alive, and Yair and Avner Netanyahu will be granted protection for at least the next five years.

Initially, it was discussed whether Sara should also receive lifelong protection, and whether Yair and Avner's status should be reviewed on a yearly basis, before the aforementioned consensus was reached, sources told Ynet.

This will be implemented regardless of the outcome of the October 27 Knesset election, the committee noted.

The move comes after heavy pressure from both Netanyahu and his wife, and follows on from Shin Bet Chief David Zini approving the Netanyahu family's request to propose the extended personal protection to the committee on Wednesday.

David Zini served as the Prime Minister's military secretary prior to his appointment as Shin Bet chief.

Shin Bet, Mossad assess that Netanyahu is at 'lifetime threat level'

Shin Bet and Mossad officials believe that Netanyahu and his family are at a "lifetime threat level" due to a desire for revenge from enemies of the State of Israel due to Israel's recent wars, Ynet reported.

Committee sources also said that the current decision applies only to the Netanyahu family, and that other prime ministers' relatives will be examined separately on a case-by-case basis, Ynet added.

These include the families of former prime ministers Naftali Bennett, Yair Lapid, Ehud Olmert, and Ehud Barak, Ynet added.
