Tony Bargig, an Israeli businessman and casino owner once known as the "King of Slot Machines," was reportedly murdered on Wednesday in Prague.
Bargig, 54, had been living and working in Prague for several years, Ynet reported, and had owned several gambling businesses.
Prague police confirmed that the matter was under investigation, and that someone else had been involved in Bargig's death.
Bargig indicted for operating illegal casinos
Bargig had previously faced legal trouble in Israel, operating around 15 illegal casinos across the country from 2008 to 2014.
He had been indicted for his crimes, but in 2020 was sentenced under a plea deal to only 15 months in prison, as well as a forfeiture of one million shekels and an additional fine of 350 thousand shekels.
Afterward, Bargig had entered a dispute with the Israeli Tax Authority, which claimed that records seized during his arrest indicated that his illegal gambling organization had earned him tens of millions more shekels than he had reported as his income.
Another controversy associated with Bargig, as reported by iGamingToday, was that his wife, Nurit, had been an active-duty officer in the Israel Police while he was being investigated for potential criminal activity.
While no allegations of improper conduct were made against Nurit, police officials reportedly viewed their marriage as a concern, and she was eventually transferred to a different district.
