A woman in her 40s died after being stabbed by her husband in Beersheba early Sunday morning, with police arresting him at the scene after he called to report the attack.

Israel Police officers arrived at the scene after the attacker called police, telling them that "I stabbed my wife."

N12 News reported that the couple's five-year-old son may have been in the apartment at the time of the incident.

Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics who were called to the scene provided the woman with medical treatment and evacuated her to Soroka Medical Center in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

"We were led to the woman, who was unconscious and had numerous penetrating wounds to her body,” MDA paramedic Yarin Ben-David and senior EMT Rafael Cohen said. “We provided her with medical treatment and evacuated her to the hospital while she was unconscious and in critical condition."

Police arrest husband, open investigation into murder

Police have opened an investigation into the incident, noting its criminal nature. The husband, a man in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of involevement at the scene.

"A morning when the harsh reality in which many families in Israel are living is again in the headlines due to the terrible murder last night," wrote Vardit Danziger, CEO of the non-profit organization "No. to Violence Against Women."

"The fight against violence against women must occupy policymakers and receive a place at the national level in a broad, properly funded, properly staffed national program that will provide a decent response to hundreds of thousands of women who have experienced and will experience violence against themselves in their families."
