Venezuela's decision to renew consular relations with Israel comes after two decades in which Caracas became Iran's principal strategic partner in Latin America.

The landscape began to shift following the US capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3 and assumed a human dimension after the disaster.

ZAKA leadership welcomed the renewal of diplomatic ties between Israel and Venezuela, saying the organization’s recent humanitarian efforts helped pave the way for renewed relations.

The move creates an official channel of coordination between Israel and Venezuela, which have not maintained diplomatic relations since 2009.

"The people of Venezuela deserve free, fair, and transparent elections, and it is vital to the national security interests of the United States that those elections occur expeditiously," Cruz said.

The outage follows three nationwide blackouts in July and comes as a US-imposed oil blockade further strains the island's aging energy infrastructure.
