Café La Lush is on the promenade just off the beach in Ashdod, one of the nicest beaches in Israel. Take my advice and get here for sunset and ask for a table in the large outdoor area.

Café La Lush is a very large restaurant that opened two months ago. I liked the fact that there are quite a few large tables outside – round tables for five or six and long tables for larger parties. An extended family was celebrating a birthday while we were there.

The large space could also be responsible for the somewhat disorganized, although friendly, service. We didn’t seem to have one server, and different dishes were brought by different servers, each asking if we needed anything. I personally prefer having one server who I can turn to with questions about the menu.

Now is where I have to make a confession. As soon as I opened the menu the words “vanilla Oreo shake” (NIS 35) leaped out at me. I turned the page quickly but eventually gave in to temptation and ordered the shake and it was worth every calorie.

There was a separate cocktail menu, and my favorite husband ordered a delicious coconut pineapple concoction (NIS 48).

A word about prices before I continue. The portions here are very large and prices are very reasonable. It’s a great place for a family or group of friends who can share several dishes.

Focaccia, arancini, and other good decisions

The menu is also quite large but we knew we wanted to try something from the tabun – and the menu offered a large selection of pizzas and foccacias. We ordered the parmigiana focaccia (NIS 49) which was a large focaccia with sundried tomato spread, pesto and parmigiana. The dough was delicious, but there was a little too much tomato spread for my taste.

The brie brulee (NIS 65) was a unique dish of caramelized slices of brie cheese on a large salad of cherry tomatoes, arugala, roasted beets, seasonal fruit and candied pecans in a pomegranate vinaigrette. It was light and refreshing.

We also tried the truffle arancini (NIS 68) which were three balls of truffle risotto on tomato cream sauce with pesto and parmigiana. It may have been my favorite dish of the night.

For the main courses, we shared a fish dish and a pasta dish. The fish was a sea bass fillet (NIS 145) that was roasted and served in a white wine sauce on a bed of green vegetables. It was a very large portion that can easily be shared and was cooked perfectly.

We also shared a tartuffo cheese ravioli (NIS 78) which was again a large portion of homemade ravioli filled with cheese, truffle and parmigiana.

There is also an extensive breakfast menu including a breakfast for two with eggs, salads, breads and coffee for NIS 159.

The restaurant is open all day and definitely worth a visit.
